Alternatives to Surgery: Low Calorie Dieting

This is part 3 of our ongoing series: Alternatives to Surgery

Low calorie dieting, one of the four main diet methods, is another popular way for people to lose weight.  Meta-analysis has shown that a low calorie diet over two months can help an adult person lose an average of 7 pounds.  The main component of a low calorie diet is the production of an energy deficit of approximately 500-1000 calories per day.   By maintaining such a low calorie diet, recent studies have found that an average adult human can lose around one pound each week.  Popular plans for low calorie diets include Weight Watchers and the DASH diet.  Researchers at the National Institute of Health reviewed randomized controlled trials to determine how effective low calorie diets actually are.  From their 34 trials, they discovered that these diets can lower one’s mass by eight (8) percent over 3-12 months.

For more information about low calorie dieting, I recommend consulting a physician or a specialist in this matter.
